Back To Cool: Getting a Lesson on Denim

Back to school is the perfect excuse to treat yourself to some new fall styles, and nothing says fall quite like a new pair of denim. As trends come and go, we are here to give you the 411 on fits, feels and fades of your favorite Cato jeans with a little vocabulary lesson. Get your pens and paper ready, we’ve got quite a bit of ground to cover…

Skinny

Here’s the skinny on this classic pair: this wardrobe staple features a high-rise fit, ankle length and figure-flattering silhouette.

You liked it, Nicole Brown, @leliassoutherncharm, loved it! She’s here to share why she loves these slim-fitting styles so much.

“I love the fit of these especially if you’re looking for a more relaxed fit. I rolled mine up just to give it a casual look with this super cute plaid button up- it’s totally giving me fall vibes”

It’s the fail-proof fit no matter the season. From a white tee to chunky knit sweater, the options are endless with this one. Add a plaid top for a sneak-peek into our favorite time of year: fall.

Flare

It’s a modern take on a retro look; slim fitting through the hips and thighs, with a bell silhouette starting at the knee.

For the ultimate fall-forward vibe, Elvie, @elvieinthecity, is giving us the rundown on these pull-on, high rise jeans and how to transition this pair from summer to fall.

Complete your bohemian vibe with a bell sleeved top- bonus points if you add a paisley or floral print, or really tap into pumpkin spice season with everyone’s favorite print this time of year: plaid!

Wide Leg

Meet this year’s favorite fit yet: the wide leg. With your go-to, high-rise fit, these relaxed jeans provide comfort and casual into one trendy trouser. It’s giving us total nineties vibes, and we’re not complaining about it (we heard Friends was looking to cast some extras for the reboot…).

Even though we wish the temps were cooler, add a slim-fitting tank to combat the heat and the relaxed silhouette of these jeans. As we move into the latter-half of the year, a basic turtleneck will keep you feeling warm but looking cool.

Straight Leg

The name says it all- with a high-rise fit and classic, straight leg, these are one of our favorite, everyday pairs.

“This season I am gravitating towards boyfriend and straight leg denim styles because I love the relaxed fit and high waisted versions. I love to paired them with a graphic tee for those casual, low-key days or I also style them with more dressed-up pieces like this timeless striped button down shirt and sleek handbag to create a more elevated look!”

To dress this style up a bit, add a crisp, button-down blouse and a polished shoe, for a chic look that will take you from office to cocktail hour with ease. If you’re really hoping to keep things casual, a simple white tee or charming graphic evokes some weekend feels.

  1. I love Cato but your skinny jeans are not skinny, they seem to be straight leg jeans to me. I have had to return many pairs because of this. Skinny jeans fit close the leg from waist to ankle.

      1. Hey I always teased my nieces when they wore the ripped up jeans. Adding to that my daughters mother in law of 75 years came in with a pair. My thoughts (which I kept to myself were…….) Cmon you are too old for something like that. BUT BOY DID SHE LOOKED AWESOME., and she styled them quite well. I was at Cato the other day and found a pair on clearance. Decided what the heck I’m going to buy them. I’m sure many are saying the same thing I thought of my daughters mother in law. GUESS WHAT., I am 71 and I feel quite snappy and in style when I wear them. So to those that feel as you, Hey we all have an opinion (and I respect yours and anyone else’s as to how they feel )and I guess that is what makes the world and fashion for what it is.

  2. I have loved your jeans and bought several pairs each year but I wont be buying any of these. I need a more professional look than this for work which you guys have totally not given any consideration to. Holes and ragged hems are not acceptible in an office environment for a business owner. Hope to see you again next year.

    1. As a former business owner myself, I fail to understand why the wide leg jeans would not be suitable for your needs since you are a Cato’s shopper.

  3. I love your jeans when I can find styles that I can wear. I am short, and also am very short waisted. Your petite jeans are the perfect length, but with everything going “high waisted” I can’t wear any of them because the waist literally comes up to my chest.
