Fashion Forecast: Spring 2020

Oh, a new year. It’s the chance for new hopes, dreams and, of course, new trends. From fancy frocks to stylish selections, we’ve got your spring 2020 fashion forecast here, straight from Lisa Krows, our Senior Vice President of Design, Trend and Color.

When it comes to prints, florals will always be a favorite for spring (we know, groundbreaking.) However, in the new year, we’re taking it old school with itty bitty ditsy prints. Originating in the 1960s, ditsy floral prints were a quieter, more fun take on the classic big and bold blooms. We will see them make a comeback in 2020, in a variety of colors and motifs. Other popular prints that will make their way in are dots and dyes. Polka dots, dip dyes and tie-dyes were certainly popular last year and will continue to be big in the new year, taking on bolder and more vibrant hues.

Contrasting elements will be emerging. From bold utility styles to a softer, more feminine flair, fashion is really breaking all boundaries in the new year. Statement sleeves are going to be a very key detail. Balloon sleeves, puff shoulders, bells and flares- the more dramatic, the more exciting! Midi skirts were a fan-favorite in 2019, and believe it or not, are going to be even bigger this spring. Dramatic full skirts, sleek satin silhouettes and everything in between, it’s the perfect mix of cool and chic style.

The motto in 2019 was, “the more colorful, the better”. We saw vibrant neons and pretty pastels all year long, even in the colder months when people typically swap the brightness for subdued neutrals. These color stories will continue in 2020, with neutrals taking a darker, more rich turn and neon pink and orange being the standout shades to watch.

The more the merrier, when it comes to 2020 accessories! Say it loud and say it proud with bold statement earrings that will really make any outfit pop. For a more subtle approach to your everyday jewels, delicate layered necklaces and bangle bracelets are a lovely way to finish off any look. When it comes to textures, take a chance to go au naturel. Natural textures, like raffia and straw, are sure to be trending in bags, hats and shoes. When paired with linen looks, well, you’ll be dressed like a natural beauty.

(Multi Stone Tassel Necklace, $10.99) (Lucite Flower Wood Earrings, $6.99)

2020 really is the year of the woman; everything will be getting a little bit more feminine. Important details to note are: smocking, ruffles, tiers, flounces, lace and crochet. The more girly, the better. Even more “edgy” styles, like utility silhouettes, will embrace their femininity in 2020 (pink boiler jumpsuit, anyone?).

  1. I absolutely love your store, everyone knows me at my Cato’s. I would love to see a ruffle or flounce on dresses or skirts. I know us women want to wear heels but unfortunately I can’t. If you notice most of your really cute shoes and boots have heals. Please try to make more cute flats. Keep up the awesome great work and pricing we can afford. Thank you for finding genuinely nice helpful women to run my location.

    2. I love all sorts of shoes but I personally & being short, love a nice comfortable heel.
I think heels make you feel more confident and maybe a little spunky

  5. I have been a loyal Cato shopper for a decade at least. Love the styles. I have to agree with Mae about the shoes though. I had 2 knee surgery on 1 knee and possibly a surgery on the other. I cant do hills. Please make the same cute shoes in flats too. I’d buy so many and feel more empowered. Thanks and keep up the GREAT work.

  7. Have you considered opening another Cato location in Charlotte, NC off Mount Holly / Huntersville Rd in this newly built shopping center at Riverbend Village, near the 485 in the Mountain Island area? That would be so dope, convenient, and profitable. Theirs very not a women’s boutiques in that area and one is needed so bad…..please consider…One has to go to Northlake Mall or another Mall or another shopping center away from that side of town to shop for women’s attire.

  8. Huge fan of Cato’s. Love the prices and styles. Only complaint I have not enough small sizes in your stores. Have to shop on line for the size I want. Not happy having to pay shipping and tax. Wish you had free shipping on line as I am a huge shopper.

    1. We’re so happy to hear how much you love Cato, Ann! You can always shop online and choose “ship to store” during checkout for free shipping!

  9. I love your clothes. I’m plus size, 5’2”. Your pants and jeans for petites are great, love ankle loans because they are usually my length w/o being “petites”. My main problem with so many manufacturers….my height and being plus size. I do not look good in the tops that are more than 24” long. I must have tops just below the waist to look proportioned. No company offers this. Even petite sizes are too long for me in the drop down tops. Why don’t they make tops in 24” length??
