Season Favorites: Cozy Sweaters & Tasty Recipes

We couldn’t be any happier to finally see and feel the change of seasons – beautiful fall leaves, cool morning air, boot-worthy temps and yes . . . two things we look forward to year after year – cozy sweaters and those recipes we turn to on those cold days and nights.  Sweater weather and comfort foods just seem to go hand-in-hand, which is why sharing these two favorites was on our radar for this fall-worthy post.

When it comes to outfitting for the season, not all sweaters are created equal.  You have the ones that are cozy enough for lounging around, the ones great for holiday parties and the sweaters you rely on for an updated or layered look.  Welcoming the right styles into your cold-weather wardrobe is definitely key and remembering the four “Cs” makes it easy:

  • classics – pullovers, plaids, solids
  • cozies – chenille, relaxed turtlenecks, fuzzy knits
  • chic – embellished, shimmery, sleeve detail, sweater dress, fitted turtleneck sweaters
  • the “companions” – cardigans, ponchos, vests

If you have styles that fit into those four categories – you’ll be golden and perfectly, sweater-weather, READY!  Now let’s talk about styling.  Whether you’re going casual or dressy, a good pair of jeans and leggings are almost always recommended when it comes to pairing with this cold-weather favorite – so don’t forget to add those to your list of, must-haves!

When we think of November, Thanksgiving, bonfires and traveling to see family and friends definitely come to mind.  With that said, here are three outfits with three different styles of sweaters – perfect to wear for all three occasions.  What’s your favorite?

Now that we have sweater weather down pat, how about those recipes we promised – we definitely can’t forget those!   Some homemade hot cocoa and a favorite side dish to make for the holidays is what’s in store for you below . . .

No matter where you go, what you do or how you planning on making the most of the season, make sure you update your closet with the four Cs, treat yourself to something warm and tasty and bring your confidence with you.

Do you have a favorite style or recipe for fall – if so, we’d love for you to share!

  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup baking cocoa
  • dash salt
  • 1/3 cup hot water
  • 4 cups milk
  • 3/4 teaspoon vanilla extract

In a saucepan, combine sugar, cocoa and salt.  Add water, bring to a boil.  Cook and stir for 2 minutes.  Stir in milk; heat to serving temperature (do not boil).  Remove from heat; stir in vanilla.  Whisk until frothy.  If desired, garnish with marshmallows, cream or cinnamon sticks.

For Swiss Mocha Cocoa:

Add 2 to 2 1/2 teaspoons instant coffee with vanilla.

For Slim-Trim Cocoa:

Omit sugar.  Combine cocoa, salt and water.  Substitute fat-free milk.  Proceed as above.  Stir in vanilla with artificial sweetener, equivalent to 1/2 cup sugar

  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted, plus more for buttering baking dish
  • 3 cups mashed sweet potatoes (3 to 4 large potatoes, about 1 3/4 pounds)
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 2 large eggs

  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar – packed
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 3/4 cup chopped pecans

For the filling:  Preheat over to 350 degrees and butter a 2-quart baking dish.  Whisk together the butter, mashed sweet potatoes, milk, brown sugar, vanilla, salt and the eggs in a large bowl.  Transfer to the prepared baking dish.

For the topping:  Combine the flour, brown sugar, butter and salt in a medium bowl until moist and the mixture clumps together.  Stir in the pecans and spread over the sweet potatoes in an even layer.  Bake until mostly set in the center and golden on top, 25-30 minutes.  Serve hot.
