Cato’s styling team Don & Lauren break down their top 5 must-haves to survive the summer.
We wanted to talk to you about summer, more importantly, what you’re wearing this summer. It’s hot outside and you know what that means. Well, less layering for starters, but that means summer is here! We often get asked what some of the absolute must- haves are for summer. So, here we go; these are our top 5 must-haves to survive summer.
1. A Light Tank
This little number is essential for running around in million-degree weather. We love to see a loose tank in a soft, breathable fabric. What makes this such a great piece for summer is that if you need to cover up from the sun, a white cotton button up is your best friend. Feeling like going out? Then throw on a layered necklace, ankle jeans and a cool little jacket to dress it up. Either way, a lightweight tank is so versatile that it can be worn with just about anything. Try it tucked into a flowy skirt for a look that is super chic. Oh, speaking of…
2. A Flowy Skirt
Having a handkerchief style skirt or an adorable lightweight knee-length gauzy number that can move around when you walk helps when the humidity rises. Yes, on those sweltering days, throw on a flowy skirt with a tank and lace up sandals and you are ready for the day as you hungrily search for air conditioning and a drinking fountain.
3. Destructed Denim Shorts
This seems like a no-brainer, but we feel like it must be said. The great thing about shorts these days is that they are not just for beach wear anymore. You can dress them up with a tee shirt, blazer, and strut-worthy heels and people might mistake you for some starlet on vacation from Hollywood. What? It could happen.
4. Off The Shoulder Top
This is a big trend this season and can look really great with shorts or palazzo pants with cork wedges for a flirtatious tropical look. Now, this trend can also be worn over the shoulders but for that very fresh, and dare I say, a little sexy look, try this. We suggest putting your hair up and adding statement earrings to create a romantic casual evening look to showcase your neck and shoulders.
5. A Summer Dress
Last and certainly not least, a fun and feminine summer dress. Now, as I personally don’t wear them (I’m more of a dress shirt, vest, and slacks kind of fellow) Lauren here, swears this is the most comfortable thing to wear when you want a no fuss casual look. Isn’t
that right, Lauren? You can’t see it, but she’s nodding yes very emphatically. This is wonderful for keeping cool and looking fabulous on those warm afternoons having brunch with the ladies. Who doesn’t love drinking a mimosa while wearing a breezy summer dress, peep-toe pumps, and what the heck, a pair of big cateye sunglasses?
The lesson here is that it’s about fabric and fit. Light and breathable fabrics that will let air in are essential when strolling around in the middle of the day. The great thing is you can mix and match any of these items; add a jacket for chic street style, a sweater for a casual day look, or hat and big sunglasses when heading to the beach. Think of these pieces as the rock-steady foundation to build the warm weather wardrobe of your dreams. Well, that’s it from us. We had fun putting this list together for you and we hope this helps you survive the heat of summer.
